What does health and fitness mean to KC Undercover star Zendaya? We quiz the Disney Channel cutie for the lowdown on body confidence, kale and health kicks…
Let’s start off our health and fitness interview with a question on food, Zendaya… What’s your favourite healthy snack?
A good salad is always nice. I love it when you find a good salad with all the stuff that you like, and it’s one that’s actually super tasty. I could eat salad every day!
When it comes to food, what’s your guilty pleasure?
I’m not guilty… I openly admit that I eat ice cream every day and I love it!
How important is it to feel confident and comfortable in your own skin?
I think that’s one of the most important things out there. I think it’s really, really important to love yourself. I also think it’s important to not be afraid to love yourself. I try to tell everybody that it’s a process and it’s not something that just happens overnight. Sometimes you need time to find out who you are, but that’s part of growing up; that’s part of becoming a human being.
When did you become confident?
You know what? I feel like confidence can be found at any point in your life. It doesn’t necessarily have to be found when you’re a teenager, like me. It happens at any age. My mum just started becoming confident and she’s in her 50s.
How much do you focus on your health?
There are some days where I’m like, “You know what? I’m on a health kick today!” That day, I’ll eat a kale salad and I’ll be super healthy. I’ll drink lots of water and I’ll try to think positive. I feel like as long as you remain aware of your body’s health and you don’t allow yourself to completely go junk food crazy, then you’re OK – but I know I could do better.
Do you like to stay active?
I hate going to the gym. It’s so boring! I can’t do it, so I try to do activities that are a little more fun, like dancing or going on a hike. The other day, I went on a hike and it was really cool because I was outside and doing something active, but it didn’t feel like a boring gym session. It was still a great physical activity to do. It was fun. I’d much rather be outside on a hike than stuck in a gym saying, “One, two, three… And repeat!”
How do you keep up your energy levels on the set of KC Undercover?
Sometimes it’s hard because I work a lot of hours, but I make sure that I try to rest as much as possible when I’m not working. That’s what I do.
What’s your favourite sport or exercise?
Dancing. I love dancing! I also really enjoy the fight choreography on KC Undercover. That’s always cool, too. Sometimes it’s tough to be proud of your body when you feel a little insecure.
Do you ever have days where you feel insecure?
Thankfully, I’m not insecure with my body. I’ve found confidence in the way I am and in who I am – but not everybody has that and that’s okay because that’s part of being human. I feel like there are way more people that go through confidence issues than you think.
Have you always been this confident?
I think so. Well, there have been times before when I was younger where I wasn’t as confident as I am today – but I’ve always been pretty confident. That’s just the way I am. What body confidence tips would you give to youngsters who are feeling a little insecure? I feel like people who sometimes feel insecure feel like they are the only person feeling that way, but that’s not necessarily the truth. Even the most confident-looking celebrities are sometimes the people who are the least confident about themselves. If you’re feeling insecure, my advice is: Take the time to love everything about yourself, to find out who you really are and to live that life. Don’t compare yourself to others. Be you.
